Home Office Under Secretaries of State roles and responsibilities published at last

The Home Office has at last published the roles and responsibilities of their new junior Ministers, after the purge / re-shuffle last Friday.

This re-shuffle saw the "Communities" etc. functions of the Home Office subsumed by the former Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, which has now been rebranded as the Department for Communities and Local Government under Ruth Kelly. Obviously they still have not yet bothered to sort out a new domain name like www.dclg.gov.uk.

The Home Office, which is run by Permanent Secretary Sir David Normington, now has to try to work with this bunch of NuLabour "talent":

Secretary of State for the Home Department (Home Secretary) - Rt Hon John Reid MP for Airdrie and Shotts (central Scotland)

Will her background as a teacher and

She has a BA (Hons) in Sociology and History from the City of Liverpool College of Higher Education and an MSc from South Bank Polytechnic.

help her understand and explain the complexities of say, the National DNA Database or the biometric National Identity Register ?

Will it be Joan Ryan, or her more senior Minister of State Tony McNulty be forcing through the massive amount of Secondary Legislation and Regulations which are implied by the controversial Identity Cards Act 2006, in order to set up the proposed centralised biometric compulsory National Identity Register database and ID smartcard infrastructure ?

Or will they be busy for a while trying to sort out the scandalous mess which is the Immigration and Nationality Directorate, over which Tony McNulty has been presiding ineffectually ?
