CHINA CLAIMS 'POWERFUL BLOW' TO RIGHTS CRITICS:

China said its decision to sign a UN convention on human rights was a "powerful blow" against those who accused it of violating civil liberties, a report said in Beijing on Saturday. "The pledge (to sign the UN convention) is a powerful blow to those who take to mounting groundless attacks on China's human rights conditions," the China Daily said. Beijing said it would sign the United Nations' international covenant on economic, social and cultural rights, which along with a pact on civil and political rights, is one of the United Nations' major statements on human rights. The daily said China had waited until now to commit to signing the accord to "fulfill the obligations of the treaty," adding that "efforts" had been made by Beijing to eradicate poverty and social injustices.--AFP (article from April 20, 1997 Saudi Gazette.)
