IBM wind up at Olympia

| | Comments (0)

I decided to go to the Linux show up the road at Olympia, (no students allowed as they don`t buy anything policy) and was chatting to a friend about what name I was going to call myself for the pass,

I had a few ideas but my friend said as IBM were there why not use SCO?, so I went for Rev Adrian Rat, Software Protection, S.C.O.....

I was very surprised that I didn`t get the usual slating for using Windows products and get the run of the mill Unix, Linux, BSD etc., supremacy lectures, I have W2k Pro, on most of my boxes....

I guessed right about the out come of my "gropers" sentencing, he got sectioned for 28 days....

Hi folks,

I decided to go to the Linux show up the road at Olympia, (no students allowed as they don`t buy anything policy) and was chatting to a friend about what name I was going to call myself for the pass,

I had a few ideas but my friend said as IBM were there why not use SCO?, so I went for Rev Adrian Rat, Software Protection, S.C.O.

SCO pass

I got there in a suit (first time wearing in a few years) and tried to get in free but as it was "on the day" I had to pay ?15.00 to get in....sphericals to that!...so a bit of persuasion later I get in for nothing with said pass.

Me in a suit

The show itself was very small with about 30 exhibitors but nevertheless there was some interesting things around like the X box running linux from Italy, and got to learn a few bits and bobs and meet up with a lot of new people,

I was very surprised that I didn`t get the usual slating for using Windows products and get the run of the mill Unix, Linux, BSD etc., supremacy lectures, I have W2k Pro, on most of my boxes....

Anyway after hooking up with a guy who went (after a bit of plottng) to the "IBM stall" and started asking pertinent copyright questions of the "manageress Lady" and I sidle up closer earwigging, she started talking louder for my benefit...
I then turned to face her while nonchantly looking at the posters and she saw the pass...

A quick splutter later followed by, in mid sentence...
"AndAnythingElseYouNeedToKnowYouCanFindOutFromOurPressOffice" and then legged it ...my friend and I went off chuckling...

The next day I am back but in my London 2600 shirt and still using the same badge..

Everywhere I went, people came over and kept going "Ohhh... yourrrr the guy with the SCO pass"...nice one, with big grins on their faces.

At the end of the show I was talking to one of the staff from the IBM stand who expressed great delight with what had happened as..."allegedly" the lady was not too popular with the underlings...:-)

Some of this got into NTK :-) thank you Dave, also for the T shirt.

I guessed right about the out come of my "gropers" sentencing, he got sectioned for 28 days....

It reminds me of conversation with one of my locals who has this theory....get sectioned for 28 days, get put on a few nasty drugs and have a bad come down, get automatic registstration with social services, after that all you get are 28 day sentences, as above, for arson, attempted murder, ect, if you play it right....Hmmm.

------------
RANT...

The scaffolders have finished and gone....I get a breathing space before they come back after the chimney falls down and kills someone, then ...maybe Notting Hill Housing Trust will fix the problems, but I doubt it.....it will probally get put down to lack of budget...yet they can sponser building a new housing estate in Chiswick...

It appears in a lot of peoples eyes that all "NHHT" are doing is getting "fat cat" earnings creating and buying new properties but not getting penalised by the tenants problems, thus allowing the older homes to fall into disrepair.

NHHT is a charitable organisation...but all that gets raised, as in profits, only 2% has to get to the Charity.
...this also applies to any other Charity.

The 98% can be used up with admin costs, fundraisers and advertising ect, think of that next time you are in a charity shop, donating clothing or putting money in a box, for example the poppys you buy for the "War Dead" are no longer made by the blind but are instead made in prisons and other institutions as a form of work instead of painting garden gnomes ect, try instead to give it to a local school or Red Cross/RNLI jumble sale instead, or something similar...they don`t usualy have enough income to pay the professionals to cream the money.

Also the charities (main names in the High street included...ask them!) can not afford electrical engineers, as required by law regarding second hand goods, to test mains (110/240 volts or higher) electrical equipment and they will throw it in the bin rather than get it tested..... so try and find a better home for electrical items...
also while I am at it don`t leave stuff outside when they are shut ...it either gets nicked and sold at carboot sales by people that cruise the charity shops and sort through the bags around the corner and throw what they can sell into their car and drive off leaving the debris strewn all around the back streets, where people live and have to put up with the mess.

Rant Over :-)

Thank you all for reading this blog, let me know of any improvements you would like to see (within reason :-)) you can leave a comment, or email me at the address of which is on the homepage as I have forgotten how to make a link from here....sorry.
