Various mainstream newspapers etc are faffing about with stories based on the Wikileaks published US Diplomatic Cables obtained, seemingly, from the trusted insider "whistleblower" Bradley Manning, a low level US Army intelligence analyst, with day to day access to SIPRnet, the Secret Internet Protocol Router Network, a US Military and Intelligence intranet.
Gary McKinnon was, back over 8 years ago, no doubt trying to get through to this network, which should have "air gaps" between it and the NIPREnet, the "non-classified" intranet, which at the time, had insufficient firewalls to protect it from the public internet.
The Wikileaks.org published alleged diplomatic cable is here.

The only bit about Gary McKinnon is this:

The UK on Key Issues
--------------------ΒΆ2. (S//NF) The Secretary's meetings with PM Gordon Brown and Foreign Secretary David Miliband likely will focus on the following key issues:
-- Afghanistan

-- Iran

-- Pakistan

-- Northern Ireland

- Defense Trade Treaty

-- Arms Trade Treaty

-- Gary McKinnon Extradition Case - The PM will likely raise with the Secretary (as he has with the Ambassador) the extradition case of Gary McKinnon. McKinnon is a 43-year old computer hacker with Asperger's Syndrome who is wanted for prosecution in the U.S.; he is accused of hacking into U.S. government systems in 2001 and 2002. McKinnon has gained enormous popular sympathy in his appeal against extradition; the UK's final decision is pending. The case has also caused public criticism of the U.S.-UK extradition treaty. In August, PM Brown, in a one-on-one meeting with the Ambassador, proposed a deal: that McKinnon plead guilty, make a statement of contrition, but serve any sentence of incarceration in the UK. Brown cited deep public concern that McKinnon, with his medical condition, would commit suicide or suffer injury in imprisoned in a U.S. facility. The Ambassador has raised this proposal with AG Holder and would be happy to brief the Secretary in more detail.

The (S/NF) designation of that part of the Diplomatic Cable from the US Embassy means "Secret / Not for Foreigners"
There is absolutely nothing in that paragraph which deserves a "Secret" classification, based as it is on public concerns.

The fact that he's being tried is pretty much like the US government is saying "Hey, we don't need to do our jobs in fulfilling national security!". I don't get it?! Shouldn't they have the capability in stopping the best of hacker anywhere in the world. I think this thing about Gary being tried is irrelavent, and people should be focussing on the fact that NASA is not taking their jobs seriously and hoping to shift the focus on to someone else. As a matter of fact I think Gary should be paid for his services to the America people for bringing this to light, and I hope the guy gets some really good job offers with big $$$.

@ Matt - raising particular issues with politicians and bureaucrats is difficult, and getting them to keep their promises after an election is even more so.
Both the Gary McKinnon campaign and the National Autistic Society have benefited mutually from each other's support, in terms of public awareness and political pressure and influence.
Where do you get the idea that nobody else got any help apart from Gary McKinnon ?

We don't have any leaked U.S. State Department memos from the Tony Blair era. In spite of Tony Blair's regime enacting the extradition treaty that was illegally applied retroactively to Gary, Tony Blair DID NOT extradite Gary. All of Gary's supporters owe Tony Blair a huge apology. Because of Tony Blair, Gary remained free in the U.K. Sir William Wallace should have been so lucky went Robert the Bruce held Sir William's fate in his hands. Blair saved a common man, Gary. If the Blair era memos are leaked, Blair can only come out a hero of the British people. Thank you Tony and my apologies. I'm a dog lover as well.
fg
@ Eochaidh OghaChruithne - nonsense ! We owe Tony Blair nothing except a fair trial in a UK court for his multiple misdeeds !
Some people would put him on trial for the Iraq invasion, something which I personally agree with (Saddam Hussein's evil regime should have been dealt with after the first Gulf war / invasion of Kuwait)
However Blair was the only Prime Minister who has ever been Questioned officially by the Metropolitan Police in the "cash / loans for peerages " scandal. He is personally responsible for the Labour government's "control freakery" and authoritarianism, which his successor Gordon Brown continued with.
Blair left details to his Labour political special advisors / apparatchiki and to his henchmen like the inept Home Secretaries, David Blunkett, Charles Clarke and John Reid, so he probably had never even heard of Gary McKinnon whilst he was in office.

The great truths made public by Julian Assange described in the excellent article at:
http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/johann-hari/johann-hari-this-case-must-not-obscure-what-wikileaks-has-told-us-2154109.html
make me think about the potential good Gary did by revealing the picture of the mother ship that he tried to download from NASA. If there are extraterrestrials here, they would come for only one reason - the aboriginal life forms, including us, that are found only on earth. The extraterrestrials can obtain from other planets, asteroids, stars or manufacture everything else. All metals, minerals, gems, oxygen, etc. The only thing that extraterrestrials cannot obtain somewhere else are the life forms that evolved on Earth. So, sometime in the future, Gary's contribution may help us to figure out that extraterrestrials are similar to the slave traders who kidnapped and traded Aficans around the world up until a little over 100 years ago. It also makes sense that the extraterrestrials would genetically modify us and other Earth life forms to meet the demands of their clients.
Keep in mind that the Extraterrestrial who showed Betty Hill the Star Map said that the map showed "trade" routes. The aboriginal life forms on other planets are the only thing that the extraterrestrails would not have on their own.
If Gary's efforts help us to prove the existence of extraterrestrials, then he's done human-kind as much good as Julian and all the other compassionate people who are also risking their lives and freedom.
fg
@ Eochaidh OghaChruithne - you write as if there was some actual hard evidence of the existence of extraterrestrial visitors / invaders to this planet - I remain to be convinced.
There are some similarities between the Extradition cases of Gary McKinnon and Julian Assange - they are both complicated by the appalling then Labour government's Extradition Act 2003 and they both involve computers and the internet and huge embarrassment to the incompetent and / or corrupt United States politicians, military officers, bureaucrats and civilian defence contractors.
All of these vested interests failed, time and time again, to properly secure their computer networks, despite their legal duty to do so, thereby wasting vast sums of tax payers' money and putting lives at risk.
It is also a bit early to decide whether Julian Assange's activities with the wikileaks project have done more good than harm, or vice versa.

fg, the proof of UFOs is on my webpage (Geek Down). The C.I.A. has been eliminating highly skilled people in the computer and UFO fields since Admiral Forrestal, I'm sorry to say. Proof, actually involves arguments, syllogisms, logic, etc. Physical evidence that we can hold in our hands is many times unnecessary. Gary has helped to prove the existence of Extraterrestrials and that's why the US is attacking him. Five years from now, we'll know.
