Parliamentary Written Answer 11 September 2006:

US-UK Extradition Treaty

John Reid: This information can be provided only at disproportionate cost.

The Home office could not cope with the number of Representations to the Home Secretary sent by Gary McKinnon's supporters, let alone the other people who are being unjusttly treated by the bureaucrats who are implementing the provisions of this one sided treaty.

Surely it is a trivial matter for the Home Office civil servants to keep a running total of the number of emails and letters they get on a given subject ? It is not as if they have to go and commission independent research from the general public, they have all the relevant data to answer this Parliamentary Question from the Liberal Democrat Home Affairs spokesman, at their fingertips, or they should have, if the Home Office was actually "fit for purpose".

What are they trying to hide with the dubious "disproportionate cost" excuse ?
