New Cold War: The Home Front
An essential element of the last, forty-year cold war was manichean, double-standard thinking on both sides that relentlessly vilified the other, denied it had any legitimate national interests outside its own borders and blamed it for every conflict. The result was to maximize differences, minimize mutual understandings and inspire a nearly catastrophic nuclear arms race.I am not sure the New Cold War is with Russia or China - unless they turn out to be the ultimate backers of the Islamist terrorist threat - but right now that description sums up the current atmosphere between the USAxis and the IslamicAxis really well.
The threat of the "homegrown terrorist" now means that the New Cold War will invade the home front - with increased propaganda, blacklists, cointelpro operations , surveillance - and yes, yet more data-mining of phone calls, emails and financial records.
