I am a regular TOR user - up until now. Today as I was doing my internet thing using TOR, Vidalia and Privoxy, I happened to notice a red warning notice in Vidalia's Message window. It said:
Oct 01 23:11:56 911 Warning Requested exit node 'NSAFortMeade' is in ExcludeNodes or ExcludeExitNodes.. Using anyway.
Using anyway??? TOR was using an NSA node despite my express blocking of it in TOR's configuration file.
I believe an explanation by the TOR developers is in order. If TOR cannot be trusted, everything being said and done here, counts for naught.
@ Someone - surely you do not think that this Tor Exit node has got anything to do with the real US National Security Agency headquarters at Fort Meade, Maryland, USA ?
There is no evidence to suggest (apart from the name) that "NSAFortMeade" is actually run by the US National Security Agency. That particular Tor node name has been online for several years. Conversely, neither is there any evidence to prove that another current Exit Node called "nottheNSA" is being truthful in its description.
Vidalia's GeoIP derived data is not always accurate.
The IP address block seems to be allocated to a server hosting company in Columbus, Ohio
Resolves to tor.epipe.com
You are probably reading too much into the error message text "using it anyway". A few seconds with a search engine produces a plausible explanation and links to the open source code which you can check for yourself.
http://www.mail-archive.com/or-talk@freehaven.net/msg09213.html
Tor Exit nodes also participate in the general "anonymity cloud" mixing, although to a reduced extent, under the latest software versions (so that they can concentrate on being Exits) so fetching digitally signed directory lists, is not a problem - they cannot be tampered with by a rogue exit node.
That is one of the features of the Tor anonymity cloud design, it assumes that some of the Tor nodes and exit routers will be hostile ones, but that does not actually matter that much, unless you are doing something against the explicit warnings about how to use Tor, such as logging into your unencrypted POP3 or web email account via Tor with personally identifiable credentials.
Remember also, that any particular Exit Node is only used for about ten minutes , before another one is randomly chosen, unless you force a new connection earlier than this manually.
If you drastically reduce the pool of potential allowed Tor Exit nodes with too many Excludes, then you weaken the anonymity of your Tor connections.
If you no longer "trust" Tor, then what is your alternative ?
good quality post thanks
thanks good post
