Surveillance will cost more than £34 billion say Convention on Modern Liberty
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/crime/article5755524.ece
February 18, 2009
"The cost of Britain's state-run databases has soared to £34 billion over the next ten years, according to estimates from a new campaign against what it called the surveillance society.
Supporters of the Convention on Modern Liberty claim that spending on computer systems ranging from the NHS Spine to the ID card register is rising at an alarming rate across Whitehall.
The convention will hold its first meeting in London at the end of this month with a range of prominent supporters including Philip Pullman, the author, David Starkey, the historian, and Brian Eno, the musician, as well as politicians, lawyers and civil liberties campaigners. "
1984 and this is not a movie - this is a proof that - the truth could be written to suit the governments view, without any oversight.
Failed Home Office Minister Tony McNulty, who is now presiding over unemployment policy disasters at the DWP, seems to have been wheeled out by the Government spin machine to attempt to downplay this implied critiicism by Dame Stella Rimington and others
Why is Home Secretary Jacqui Smith or the current Home Office Minister of State for Policing, Crime and Security Vernon Coaker not respondfing to this criticism ?
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/politics/lawandorder/4681067/Minister-accuses-former-MI5-chief-of-abject-nonsense.html
This is typical McNulty style bluster and lies, with a hint of an ad hominem attack on his opponent.
What exactly is this NuLabour apparatchik's definition of a "police state" (bearing in mind their Orwellian newspeak perversion of the English language) ?
As Devil's Kitchen said recently:
"Tag your citizens, politicise the police, form and fund an unaccountable police pressure group to lobby you, give them incredibly wide-ranging powers, and then make it illegal for anyone to make or hold evidence of the police abuse: NuLabour have now pretty much created the archetypal police state."
You Know ... the more I think about it .. the more I think we are all seriously f*ck*d ....
Thank for your comment about my post on Dame Stella Rimington.
I will update it with your post.
Thanks again and good job.
Carlos.
My... hasn't Ms Rimington has changed her tune! Isn't it interesting how retirement changes 'one's' perspective. Perhaps seeing what happened to her successor Eliza Manningham-Buller influenced this change of heart, that's assuming she had one. The British secret services will continue with their abysmal failings increasingly in the full glare of the public. The latest weapon in their arsenal, Section 76 of the counter terrorism act 2008, which has them criminalising photographers and journalists will see to that.
