Why cannot my wife and I add our names to your petition without also being obliged to pledge £10 each to the 'fighting fund'. We are dead against the proposals for ID cards and WILL NOT PAY FOR THEM - but lashing out £20 towards a fund is contrary to democratic policy. They should be voted out - not legally ruled out of court. What we need is a referendum - another one! JF
Assuming that you mean the current NO2ID pledge, which is not actually a petition:
http://www.pledgebank.com/refuse
NO2ID did run a petition on the Number 10 Downing Street website, which gathered over 3,000 signatures.
The current "pledge" is not intended for those people who cannot afford or do not wish to afford £10 towards a legal fighting fund.
There are likely to be other , different pledges in the future e.g. to help set up or to support a local NO2ID group in your area etc.
Although this pledge is not a petition, it does demonstrate a level of hardcore of legal resistance to the National Identity Register plans.
What happens if,as seems likely, the Government does pass the Idnetity Cards Bill into law ? No sensible Member of Parliament who had actually read the Bill would have voted for it, but 314 of them, a majority of 31, have just done so at the Second Reading.
As it stands there are several possible legal challenges, which the , as yet non-existant legal fighting fund could be used for. e.g. well before the stage when anyone actually has to refuse to be Registered under Compulsion, there would seem to be an excellent case for challenging the plan to force you to be biometrically registered in order to apply for or renew a Passport. ID cards with NIR registration will be available separately for those who do not want a Passport, but Passports (even Biometric ones) will not be available for people who refuse to register on the NIR.
This breaks all kinds of European Union and United Nations conventions on the right of free travel or the freedom to work in other EU countries.
Joining the NO2ID campaign only costs £15 per annum, which is another way of supporting the cause
