my deep and sincere thanks again and again to marianne and louis for being so gracious and open.

peace to everyone,

marianne and louis (part one)

as i’ve mentioned quite a bit over the past few weeks, tonight brings us part one of an interview with bay area singer/songwriter marianne barlow! episode 176 includes some discussion about the writing and recording of marianne’s cd “magic words,” and features a few songs performed live “in-studio” (so to speak) with her incomparable bass player louis vega. as you’ll hear, marianne’s music is a thoughtful mix of personal lyrics, melody, rhythm, and just-plain-red-blooded-real-life-heart. each component is simple on its own, quite beautifully. and, the connection and interrelation between the elements, the feeling – the hope, and dreams, and stories that marianne shares – feels whole and complete and warm with possibility. as i type this here and now, i realize that maybe saying it this way sounds abstract?? maybe? i hope not. honestly, what i mean mostly, is just the feeling of family itself, in the most broad, accessible, sense. that’s how marianne’s music feels to me. like family should be – the familiar open door of home.

i think marianne accomplishes all of this in a unique and powerful way. the truth is in her songs. and, for me, this is where the best music in the world always comes from. so, with this in mind, i’m honored and blessed and excited to share marianne’s music with you tonight. it’s good stuff! :)

here’re three things i hope:

1) you’ll listen
2) you’ll share the podcast with like-minded friends
3) you’ll visit and support marianne at:

happy january to all!

out of tune

i'm re-listening to the podcast now, and just realized how out of tune the guitar is. eeek! i apologize. it's not good form, i realize. but - given the state of things at the moment - it's also fitting somehow. :)

ok. out of tune, or otherwise, i do hope yr well tonight.

ground loop

tonight's podcast is extremely simple - one new song - in various variations and forms. i just started playing around with computer recording tools last week, and i'm learning. slowly. happily, i'm being persistent about it (so far), and i'm noticing little areas of improvement. which is gratifying. hopefully i'll have steadily improving examples to share as the weeks move forward. i'll keep trying. so, we'll see...

i forgot to mention it in the podcast itself, but the title of the song - the metaphor of the "ground loop" in general - is mixed somewhere between the arcane technicalities of electrical engineering and avionics. both. it was sort of an accidental title, but i love that it works in multiple senses and ways. and, even more, the natural/intuitive/complementary balance that both meanings hint toward - simultaneously, in different and related ways. that's a nice surprise. i didn't plan on it, but i do like how it worked out. :)

if you time, i hope you can take a listen.

happy wednesday!

more from dallas...

week two in dallas - episode 141 - has arrived! it's another simple show, and a continuation from last week in many ways... a mix of new and old songs, some thoughts about going to church, religion, identification, change, belonging, longing, faith, hope, wonder, god, loss, thankfulness... the same-old regular gamut of podcast topics, i guess?? seems so. but hopefully you'll find something of interest in it. ;)

whew. it's 10pm here. late. and i'm tired. must get some sleep! alas, wherever you are tonight, i hope you can take a listen...

yr friend,

more with ronnie...

hello to all,

i'm very happy to announce the arrival of part two of our discussion with ronnie cato! hopefully you had a chance to listen to the first segment last week. if you missed out on episode 137, i hope you'll go back, take a listen, and then join us for tonight's installment! both segments are fun, but for some reason, i especially like part two. ;) not sure why exactly? but i think it's cuz 138 brings us lots of cool musings about what it means to be inspired, to teach, be in a band, write songs... and talk about ronnie's list of recommended (recent) classical composers!

i'm wishing you a happy wednesday, and great rest of the week, wherever you are. while your listening, why not visit...

with ronnie cato!

it's my pleasure to present episode 137 tonight. as i've mentioned over the past several weeks, i did an interview with san francisco indie music legend ronnie cato back in october '08. i didn't have the songs at the time, and so, over the past few months i've been slowly piecing a podcast together. happily, part one is here tonight! :) i'm busy editing part two now, so hopefully it will be here on schedule next week.

huge thanks go out to ronnie for his patience with me, and for being willing to be a part of the podcast. his openness means a lot to me, and i think you'll find a lot worth listening to here - the songs, the ideas, the whole thing. i hope you'll check it...

a podcast concert!

i hope things're well with everybody tonight. life continues to be a whirlwind for me, but amidst all of that, i'm very happy to be able to post episode 134! as i mentioned on the podcast, i'll be playing an acoustic set of my songs this saturday night @ bazaar cafe... so i thought i'd use the tonight as an excuse to play some songs, practice, get ready, ramble on about things, etc. i just got done editing, and it was fun. i hope you'll agree. :)

if you're in the bay area, i hope you can make it out this saturday! the show sharts at 7pm, and i'll be sharing the night with friends (and former podcast guests) alex calder and patrick kobernus. if you've never been, bazaar is a great place with food, coffee, tea, beer, wine, food of all kinds... and music! if you have time, it'd be great to spend the evening with you.

i'm tired tonight. and a little bit overwhelmed with things too. but it's ok. just life, and i do see the beauty in it. i'm thankful to be here, and very happy to present episode 133 for your listening pleasure! given my overwhelmedness of the moment, it's just a simple show - some fun music from the past, mixed with time travel, a few thoughts, and a gentle backward glance... if you can, i hope you'll take a listen. :)

more than anything, thanks for being here with me tonight. many xtra thank yous to jon, sam, and josh, for the music. amerdings and russell will forever be a fond part part of my heart.

music and talk with patrick and anna...

hi all,

things're a little busy here this week, but i'm happy to post part one of our interview with singer/songwriters anna povzner and patrick kobernus. i've played with patrick and anna in a band called slyway over the past few years, and it's been a lot of fun sharing and getting to know them. as you'll hear in tonight's podcast, the term "slyway" refers to the meditation practice and teaching of early 20th century philosopher gurdjieff. we talk about him, and the tayu practice - plus creativity, songwriting, trying to make sense of life, etc. it's interesting stuff. :)

if you have time, i hope you'll check out part one and join us again next week!

ebb and flow

editing tonight's podcast, i found myself feeling a bit vulnerable. in numerous ways. i guess it's ok. or, well - hopefully it is. tonight brings us to part two of our on-the-road alaskan adventure. this time live from fairbanks. (you can find the official city website here). not sure what the latitude is in fairbanks, but it's about 350 miles north of anchorage, which is (i think) as far north as i've ever been. it's home to the international arctic research center, so a cool place - literally and figuratively. :)

fairbanks found me at the end of my time away from home... tired and a little lonely, etc. i think it shows. and i guess that's what the whole vulnerable (a.k.a. insecure) feeling is about. i'm self-conscious about it, but hopefully you won't find it too (too) annoying. for good and bad, somehow it just feels like the real ebb and flow of life. and it feels that way - almost literally - like the tide was in last week, and now it's out with the moon... or something like that? maybe. anyway, whatever the cause, it feels important to be honest about it. so, that's sorta where i'm coming from tonight. i hope it's ok. with that in mind, i play some more songs from my olden days, read lyrics, think about where things are, try to make sense of the feeling, etc. if you have time, i hope you can take a listen.

i'll be back in california for next week's podcast! and it'll be the podcast 2 year anniversary! wow. unfortunately for me, it looks like i'll be out of town again - this time in sacramento. so, we'll see how it goes... next week i'm planning on playing music from some of our guests and contributors over the past few years - kris hauch, the mannequins, julius caesar, danny scherr, toy house, and more... i hope you'll stay tuned!

above all, thank you for being here. so much. it means a lot.

north to the future...

episode 104 brings us to anchorage alaska! this is my second visit up north, and anchorage is definitely growing on me. :) tonight finds me in a hopeful (and chatty) frame of mind. which is overall a good thing, i think. i'm always a bit astonished at how thought processes and feelings move and shift and evolve with time - how our perception of possibility is affected by the people we meet, the randomness of accidents (good and bad), our experiences. can't say i really understand any of it. i don't. and sometimes i see how not understanding can be beautiful. and how - even when it's not - it's still important to be honest about. don't know if that makes sense? it's a fine line, i guess. cuz "not understanding" can easily devolve into negligence, apathy, misunderstanding, bitterness. i know. i've been there too. i'm definitely not trying to glorify ignorance with any of this, or put a happy bow on the shitty things that life sometimes forces us toward. but. letting go of (or just loosening our grip on) the need to hammer everything into define-able black and white answers feels important. 'least to me.

i want this to be different too. i wanna see the real thing. i wanna tell the truth. and i'm stuck here with this. the feeling, the loss, the wanting to connect and be more. and it's good and bad and both and neither - all at the same time. somehow. so, i guess most of where i'm at tonight comes from that place in myself. i don't wanna have answers just to have answers. cuz i know (for me) answers are sometimes just place holders for "i'm scared as hell." and, when that's the case, i think it's ok to say so. important, in fact.

so, i don't know. within and around and beyond all that - the feeling of it is quite amazing at times, y'know? can be. the letting go. the it-being-ok of it. it's a relief not to have to pretend like i know stuff i don't know - to just say "i'm confused, torn in different directions, lost, trying to make things better, making constant mistakes..." sometimes that's the place we need to be. or the place we just are. either way, sometimes that's the right thing. it's taken me a while to come to peace with that. and i'm still not there all the way... but i do see the beauty of being here. now. even though it's scary and lonely a lot of the time. it's still good. and i'm thankful for it.

i guess some of it's connected to the whole "bitter/sweet" thing in the movie vanilla sky. maybe that's all i'm saying? texture and time and pacing are neeeded. ups and downs make sense. good and bad are both. i think so.

hope everybody's having a great week.

as i've mentioned on the podcast a few times recently, ryan sharp was kind enough to drop by and say hi a few weeks back. we recorded some songs live, and talked about a whole range of fun stuff - songwriting, art, language, politics, history, religion, and more... some tangents, some related to his songs, life in general, being us in the u.s., etc. it was a good conversation, and i'm really happy (+ thankful) that ryan made the time to visit and participate with the podcast. it means a lot to me. :) the result is a pretty cool two-part interview! tonight features part one. i hope you'll take a listen.

if you don't already know ryan's music and his band the cobalt season, i really hope you'll check 'em out at www.thecobaltseason.com, learn more, and pick up their new cd "fragile iconoclast".

all the best,
russell

more with sparklebritches

as promised, i'm very happy to present part two of the interview with sparklebritches tonight. if you didn't get a chance to catch episode 92, i hope you'll go back and take a listen... it's 40 minutes of some great music and discussion centering around the creative process, life, motivation, etc. if you *did* listen last week, i know you're gonna like part two - cuz it's even better! :) if you enjoy, i hope you'll share this with your friends and people you know who might be interested. that would be really cool. the best, actually.

most of all, i wanna send thanks again to heather and chris and keith for making the time and being open. it means a lot.

wishing u the best week,
russell

sparklebritches!

as i mentioned last week, episode 92 features the first part of an interview with sparklebritches. some of you may remember that heather shared her song "on the one" with us last year, and i featured it on the podcast a handful of times over the summer and fall of '07. it's a beautiful song that taps into longing and wistfulness and memory, and really hit home as exceptional to me. as i get to know heather, i'm more and more struck by her personal approach to songwriting, and her intuitive ability to convey themes and feelings that connect. so, yep, i'm a fan. and i'm totally honored that she and the rest of the 'britches (chris on bass and keith on drums) took the time to welcome me into their practice space and share their music with me. it means a lot. :)

tonight's segment features some great songs - (in order of appearance) - "people in a room," "too damn somewhere else," "commencement," and "the song (i will never write for you)." interspersed between, we talk about songwriting and band dynamics, love, family, the human side of growing up, trying to make sense of life, the world, etc. i never quite know what to expect when i first talk to someone in an "interview" type setting. every interaction is always new and different with each person. but what i always hope for is something like what happened with sparklebritches - talking for real with real people about life and feeling and struggles and attempts to make things better. which sounds simple, i know. but when i think about my hope for the podcast, or what i hope we can share and create between us with music, that's what comes to mind first. maybe it's small? maybe. but it also somehow feels more rare than it should be.

for all of these reasons, i want to thank heather and keith and chris for their openness and participation and patience with me. i hope you'll take a listen, tell your friends, and visit sparklebritches at: myspace.com/sparklebritchesmusic. they deserve your support and friendship.

stay tuned. part 2 will be here next week!

thanks,
russell

danny scherr - part two

i just uploaded part two of my interview with danny scherr, and hope you can take a listen. as you heard last week, danny has a lot to say, and has written some absolutely beautiful songs. he plays more for us tonight - including one of my all-time favorite's - "you can go on without me." the interview continues where we left off last week, and we get to hear about danny's experiences moving to san francisco in the mid-90's, accidentally meeting elliott smith, and recording his cd richmond special. it's a fun hour! i'm really honored to share it with you (and thankful to danny for his openness). i hope you'll check it out... :)

new songs by nick guerrero

tonight's podcast features new music and talk with nick guerrero! nick was our very first guest back in sept '06, and it's an honor to have him back with us again. as i was editing the show tonight, i was struck again (anew) by how the podcast itself - and the ability to showcase nick's music here - pretty much epitomizes my vision of "simplemuzik" as a vehicle for us to connect and hear artists that we would (quite literally!) never have the chance to encounter under any other set of circumstances. it's exciting to me! and i feel lucky to be living here and now - with you - and to have the ability to share this.

as you'll hear on the show, nick's songs are heartfelt and personal - and a simple expression of who he is, and where he is, as a person. he's a real-life guy who supports himself with a day job, and all-the-while, keeps working to grow as an artist - to perceive and engage the world through songwriting, recording, trying. and, honestly, this sense of music (or art in general) as a tool to understand our own lives, and make sense of the world, is one of the most beautiful things i know of. the depth and honesty and fact of nick's passion, and heart, and urge to create, is helplessly compelling to me in that sense - that he's doing what he's doing - that he keeps trying - using whatever's around to do the best that he can. i'm inspired.

and, in a similar way, i'm amazed and in awe that he isn't an isolated case! there are people of all stripes and creeds and visions doing similar things all around us. all the time! the world is rich with expressions of individual experiences of the world - stories, art, ideas, feeling - songs. and, to my heart, the real truth and value of it is always born in the interaction that these expressions have with us - here and now - when we take the time to listen. to look. to hear what's going on around us. to not miss it.

listening is such a simple thing. and all too rare. with all of this in mind, and much more, i hope you'll take a listen to episode 69. and i hope you'll visit and share and support what nick is doing.

ps - hopefully the "live" ambient reality won't be too annoying this week. i recorded the interview on the street, so there are the requisite muni trains, dogs, babies, people, cars, etc., etc. hope it's ok! ;)

featuring author and musician john levitt

i mentioned my friend john levitt on the podcast a few weeks back, and talked a little about his just-released urban-fantasy novel "dog days." it's good! john's a fascinating guy with a lot to say, an author and musician, and he was kind enough to share episode 64 with me. john plays some of his favorite classic folk, jazz, and blues songs, and we talk about creativity, writing, inspiration - the whole gamut! i'm seriously honored to present tonight's show, and i really hope you'll take a listen.

if you like what you hear, i also hope you'll check out john's site at www.jlevitt.com. you can read the "sfrevu" review of john's novel here, and the "greenmanreview" here. if you're in the buying mood, you can check out the book at your favorite local bookstore, or online at amazon.com. also, as mentioned in the show, john and i are both members of the band the procrastinistas. i hope you'll check us out, and be our friend on myspace. :)

special thanks to john for making time to share with us. this is one of my favorite episodes so far. no doubt about it.

wishing you the best evening,
russell

curt yagi

if you've been listening to the podcast over the course of the past few weeks, you already know curt yagi. he's a local san francisco singer/songwriter, and doing some great stuff - both musically, and through his work with the non-profit foundation r.o.c.k. (learn more at www.rocksf.org). curt was kind enough to meet up with me a few days ago to talk about the creative process, music, motivation, and his upcoming cd "what's come over me" (available starting friday). curt's songs are well-written, smart, and thought-provoking in a heartfelt way - which is what first compelled me about his work, and also what makes me so thankful to share his stuff with you. i hope you'll take a listen!

also, i want to make sure that everyone knows about the cd release of "whats come over me" - this friday, november 9 - at jelly's bar (295 terry francois blvd, pier 50), san francisco, 8pm. cost is $10 advanced, $15 door, 21+ only.

huge special thanks to curt for sharing his music and time with us. if you can, i hope you'll check his links below, and support what he's doing.

kris hauch plays the piano!

if you get a chance, i really hope you'll take a listen to this week's podcast with kris hauch. after joining us last november (as our guest on episode 12), kris was kind enough to return for another show - this time with even more music, and some live performances on piano! kris' music is fun and energetic and smart, and i'm truly honored that he agreed to share it with us so openly. before he agreed to do the show, kris asked if we could keep it "shorter, with less talking," so that's what we tried to do. hopefully we succeeded. i'm biased, obviously - but i think we did!

if you like what you hear, i hope you'll visit kris' myspace, download his songs, and support his bands.

you can find him at:
kris hauch solo (named after his cat) - www.myspace.com/thefannycake

and there's a wiki article about mr. pride here.

also, as kris suggests, don't forget to google search how to write a song,
and how to sing. when you find out, let me know, ok? ;)

thanks for listening!

a simple conversation

this week's show is just me and my sister amanda on an average night, listening to music, talking about life, how things are going, ideas of hope, feeling, growing, etc. i've mentioned before about the intimacy possible in the podcast format - how i'm attracted to it - and in a really informal way, i think episode 49 gets at some of that. intimacy is such an elusive and subjective and amazing thing, isn't it? so, don't know if you'll feel the same way i do about it? but, if you get a chance, i hope you can join us and think and feel and share the hour. we listen to some beautiful songs by the cobalt season, varona, julius ceasar, and kris hauch. and we talk. and that's pretty much it. :) i know it can be scary to talk out loud and on the spot like this, so i'm really thankful to amanda for being so patient with me, and putting up with my silly questions and rambling. i hope you will be too. and, if you listen, i hope you'll find something of value and/or interest in it. if so, both amanda and i would love to hear from you. i hope you'll share with us.

the imperfect truth

doing the podcast week by week is funny. i never know what to expect, or how things will turn out, or how my feelings or the moment (or the day) will turn and inform what happens. it's weird how that stuff works. sometimes i'm up and chatty and able to get it right, and others i flounder and go in a thousand different directions (and nowhere) all at once - distracted, inarticulate, etc. regrettably, i think tonight might be an example of the latter. i'm feeling a bit exhausted and deflated, which shows. on the up side, i play some songs live in-studio. which is fun! but, i also manage to do a lot of rambling (and mumbling) in-between songs, which is making me cringe as i type and upload. hopefully it's not as annoying as i fear. can't tell. but i feel compelled to mention it (so you know i know), and apologize. rest assured - i've taken note, and promise to enunciate and stay on topic next week! no, i mean really. i will. :)

all that aside, i gotta admit being in love with the intimacy that podcasting allows. even when it's broken and imperfect. i love that it can feel like such a personal, one-one, conversation. and that it can be. and is! and that it's up to us. so, maybe, somehow, that's the silver lining? i hope so. i hope it's ok. and i hope the energy and passion and possibility comes through within and around (and despite) the obvious imperfections i'm prone to. that's the goal. i know i don't always get there, but i'm trying.

so, with all this in mind - if you get a chance - i'd love to share episode 46 with you. it means a lot to me that you're here, that you take the time to read this, and share and listen. it's an honor. seriously. i really do see it that way. so thank you! i don't know how to convey the emotional truth of it any clearer than that - but i'm thankful. for real. your patience and kindness mean the world.

if you can listen, i'd love to hear your impressions/suggestions/ideas/criticisms of the songs and performances. it's helpful. the songs are:

i like it when you kiss me (intro)
sometimes, at night
for times like these
about everything
you'll never see
i like it when you kiss me (full version)

it's been too long since we've had live music and interviews on the show! i know. so, with that realization in mind, i'm very happy to bring you episode 43 with singer/songwriter marianne barlow. marianne was gracious enough to come by last week, talk with me, and play some songs live in-studio. if you're not already a fan, you're in for a great treat... and if you do know marianne's music - well, then you know you're in a for a great treat! :)

in my opinion, the podcast creates a perfect frame for the intricate and intimate world's embedded within marianne's songs. plus, as you'll hear, we also get a chance to talk about songwriting, shyness, growth, relationships, the songs themselves... it's an interesting and personal hour of music and talk. i really hope you can join us!

on the road

episode 35 is a bit of an experiment. i recorded it last week while travelling, which makes it the first official simplemuzik "on the road" episode! cool, huh? :) hopefully i'll be able to do fun interviews and such with this same technology in the near future. but, alas, what we have this week is just me sitting on a hotel balcony in waikiki, talking stream-of-consciousness, as garbage trucks and parties and planes surround. that, and i play some outtakes from my 2002 cd "songs for when you think you made a mistake." i'm a little embarrassed to throw this rambling out, but (for better or worse?) will resist the urge to self-censor. so, here goes. hope it's ok.

love,
