departures

i'll be out on the road this week, so there won't be a podcast this wednesday. in lieu, i just recorded a little hello. it's not much - just a few new 2010 songs, some songwriting in real time, and a thought about the incomparable vic chesnutt.

if you can take a listen, i hope you will. :)

as mentioned, you can see some songs on youtube here and here.

you can read more on vic's story here.

thank you,
russell

marianne and louis (part one)

as i’ve mentioned quite a bit over the past few weeks, tonight brings us part one of an interview with bay area singer/songwriter marianne barlow! episode 176 includes some discussion about the writing and recording of marianne’s cd “magic words,” and features a few songs performed live “in-studio” (so to speak) with her incomparable bass player louis vega. as you’ll hear, marianne’s music is a thoughtful mix of personal lyrics, melody, rhythm, and just-plain-red-blooded-real-life-heart. each component is simple on its own, quite beautifully. and, the connection and interrelation between the elements, the feeling – the hope, and dreams, and stories that marianne shares – feels whole and complete and warm with possibility. as i type this here and now, i realize that maybe saying it this way sounds abstract?? maybe? i hope not. honestly, what i mean mostly, is just the feeling of family itself, in the most broad, accessible, sense. that’s how marianne’s music feels to me. like family should be – the familiar open door of home.

i think marianne accomplishes all of this in a unique and powerful way. the truth is in her songs. and, for me, this is where the best music in the world always comes from. so, with this in mind, i’m honored and blessed and excited to share marianne’s music with you tonight. it’s good stuff! :)

here’re three things i hope:

1) you’ll listen
2) you’ll share the podcast with like-minded friends
3) you’ll visit and support marianne at:

myspace.com/mariannebarlow
mariannebarlow.com
cdbaby.com/cd/mariannebarlow

happy january to all!
russell
