| How Rainbow Bridge Began Many years ago, I began being asked to assist with the passing of my family and friends' pets. When I was able to perform the euthanasia procedure in their homes, I discovered how much more at ease everyone was, not only the animals, but the people as well. Despite this being such an incredibly difficult time, being able to be at home made the process and the healing just a bit easier. As my career progressed, I worked in many different areas of veterinary medicine, but I always wanted other people who love their pets to have the same opportunity to ease the passing of their companions at home. Finally, in 2000, Rainbow Bridge Pet Services, my at-home euthanasia practice, came into being. Since then, I have been able to help many people with euthanasia for their pets in the privacy of their own homes where they are able to plan ceremonies or grieve in any manner they wish. I also assist with options for disposition of the body including transportation to the crematory and arrangement for the return of cremains. In 2005, I also began to provide in home hospice and palliative care support for terminally ill pets. People strongly attached to their pets who want them to be able to die in familiar surroundings with family and friends will find that I can provide them the time and emotional space they need for grieving each pet's passing. I am honored when people will allow me to be with them at this most intimate time in their life together. -Dr. Anthony J. Smith |

| The Legend of the Rainbow Bridge - Text Version Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.... -Anonymous |
