MILLER HIGHLIGHTS THREAT TO RETIREMENT SAVINGS

As chairman fo the House Education and Labor Committee, George Miller held a hearing on October 7 to examine the impact of the current financial crisis on retirement security. At the hearing, it was revelaed that the stock market crash wiped out $2 trillion in 401ks and other retirement accounts. Read more about it here.

George makes criminal referral on mine safety

George made a criminal referral to the U.S. Justice Department based on his committee’s detailed investigation of the deaths that occurred at the Crandall Canyon Mine in Utah last year, the worst mining disaster of 2007. Mother Jones' recently ran a good article, "When is 'Tough Love' Torture?", covering George's efforts to curb abuse at "teen boot camps":

"Last time this country witnessed somebody with a bag over his head and a noose around his neck, the world was horrified and the nation was embarrassed,...To be told [by these witnesses] that this is considered a valid therapy by someone in the care of someone else's child�It's hard to believe."

Hundred's of friends, family, and longtime supporters showed up this past Friday for George's birthday/fund-raiser in Pleasant Hill, California.

While it was hard to top last year's special guest, newly minted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, this year longtime liberal activist and Hollywood action star, Danny Glover, kept the audience on its feet with some rousing rhetoric of his own.

The Contra Costa Time's Lisa Vorderbrueggen was there and had this to say:

"Surrounded by his grandchildren, Miller, who turns 63 on May 17, took his opportunity at the microphone to recount some of his legislative battles of the past year and half since the Democrats took majority control of Congress.

And yes, since you asked, he likes it. A lot."

Bush Signs Bill Boosting Aid to Students

This afternoon President Bush signed the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007 into law. This bill represents the single largest boost in federal financial aid since the GI Bill, and at no cost to the taxpayer. President Bush praised Rep. George Miller's work in passing the legislation. Congress Passes Overhaul of Student Aid Programs

On Friday both the House and Senate approved the College Cost Reduction Act, which will ease the burden of student loans for students and their families. The passage of this legislation is just one of the victories for Congressman Miller and the new Democratic Congress, part of the original "Six for '06" pieces of legislation that the Democrats promised to work on when they took back the Majority in the House of Representatives in November of last year.
