Rep. Miller proposes legislation to preserve the site of Port Chicago

Rep. Miller proposed a bill this week to turn Port Chicago, CA into a National Park. Today on NPR he told the story of the 320 men, nearly all of them African Americans, who died when the US Naval Base at Port Chicago caught fire during World War II.  Listen to this amazing story here.

Democrats Cheer Wage Hike

The federal minimum wage went up for the first time in over a decade yesterday, thanks to the efforts of Rep. George Miller, Chairman of the House Committee on Education & Labor, and Sen. Ted Kennedy, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions.  Rep. Miller's minimum wage legislation is just one of the achievements of the new Democratic Majority in the 110th Congress.  Read more about the wage increase here.

House Passes Overhaul Plan on Student Aid

On Wednesday the House passed Rep. Miller's student aid bill, which will cut $19 billion in federal subsidies to student lenders over five years, and help America's students who are most in need by cutting interest rates on student loans and significantly increasing grants.  Read about this important legislation in today's article from the New York Times here.
