Protect Your Privacy: Remove Your Name From Google Phonebook

Online phone number searches are nothing new.  There are dozens of web sites you can access to find someone’s phone number but Google is a household name and millions of people have access to Google Phonebook.  Because identity theft has exploded and continues to exponentially grow and occur on a daily basis, every little thing you can do to protect your privacy, the better off you will be.

Call me paranoid but in this day and age, I definitely would remove any personal information from a readily available, and free, internet resource used by millions.  Not that being listed in Google Phonebook insures your identity will get stolen, but it may help someone come one step closer.

To remove your name, click on the link below, fill out a short form, and you should be removed from the Google Phonebook within 48 hours.

Google Phonebook Removal Form

While your at it, here are some other popular sites with opt out options.

Yahoo People Search Opt Out Form

White Pages Removal Form- Look up your name, if you find it, check toward the bottom of the entry and you will find an remove your name option.

AOL White Pages- search for your name, if you find it choose to remove your listing.

Check Washing: Altering Checks to Steal Your Money

Mailbox

In my opinion, the check is the weakest link in the identity theft chain.  If you pay for your bills with checks, please consider switching to online banking.  For one, it is safer and two it is cheaper, especially considering stamps just went up to 41 cents and will most likely continue to increase.

Now that I got that off my chest, a lot of people still use the good old fashioned check to pay for their bills.  Identity thieves and other cockroaches thank you because the process of checks washing gives them a very low tech, and relatively safe way to steal a victim’s money.  No gun needed.  Thieves steal mail on a regular basis, especially in large apartment complexes with community mailboxes.  They target the outgoing mail bin, steal all the outgoing mail, fish through the bills, and locate all the checks for utility payments, or birthday checks, etc.  Once they have your checks, it is washing time.  Also, next time you pay the lawn guy or whoever with a check, an unscrupulous person could also increase the amount you paid them by doing a little washing.  Senicle, I know but it is reality.

A thief will take the checks they have stolen; submerge them in an easily obtainable chemical, usually protecting the signature portion of the check.  After some time, the chemical will dissolve away all the ball point ink from the check.

Next a thief will dry the check, re-enter a new monetary amount, and issue the check to a false identity they have conjured up, with corresponding fake identification to match.  Presto!, that is what the call check washing and U.S. Banks lost around $700 million dollars in 2005 to check fraud.  Does Leonardo Di Caprio and Catch Me If You Can (2002) ring a bell?

How to prevent check fraud/washing?

  1. Consider Online Banking- extremely safe, especially with encryption, and most banks offer the service for free.  Online Banking is easy to set up and once your up and going you will never look back.
  2. Occasionally, you still have to write a check.  If you do, please use a black gel pen instead of a ball point ink pen.  I recommend you buy Uni-ball 207  ($2) which is designed to prevent check washing.
  3. If you still prefer to mail your payments, drop off your outgoing bills at your local post office.

Before you dig- Dial 811

811

During the spring time a lot of people get out in their yards for home improvement projects.  Before you dig that hole for that new fence post or till up that patch of yard for your new garden, dial 811 to get underground utility lines, cables, and pipes, marked for free.  811 is a new service established by the FCC to help homeowners and excavators alike.  You can dial 811 from anywhere in the country and you will be forwarded to your local One Call center where an operator will take down your project details and forward you to the appropriate utility companies.  A couple of days later, you should have all the appropriate lines flagged so you can knock out your project.

The flag marking service is not new but the convenient 811 number is.  Nothing is worse than blocking off a neighborhood in the summer heat because someone accidentally struck a gas line.  Help spread the word and let people know about this service.
